Don't you love how letting your mind wander at 2AM can resolve hitherto unarticulated aversions?

Crewcut sporting lesbians, invariably standing on courthouse steps dressed in pantsuits, have been a fixture of gay-marriage debate for as long as I can remember. I concede that they have a vested interest in the struggle, as a biological clock (the main impetus for seeking "equality") seems to not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. To each her own.

My repulsion by the side-show comedy that is the same-sex-marriage debate was caused by something more sinister than the "morally-bankrupt heterosexual institution" tripe. And thanks to Florence King, I finally have figured out how I feel.

I might as well have said, "I don't want to get married, I'd rather live in Paris and have affairs like George Sand."

I arrived at the conclusion awhile ago that I don't think marriage should be something the state takes part in to begin with. Marriage works better as a private ceremony among one's friends and/or church, and shouldn't necessarily go hand in hand with legal partnership(civil unions or whatever), which everyone should have equal access to. This seems to sidestep the gay marriage debate entirely, while simultaneously making marriage more precious by taking legal system out of it and putting it exclusively in the context of one's own traditions and beliefs.

I agree with Mands. As I grow increasingly more Libertarian, I just hate the government getting involved in pretty much anything that should be a completely private affair.

Tread lightly Mr. Grow. If you ever tell me you're purchasing a plane ticket to Paris, you will be in a heap of trouble!

i just love that phrase, "heap of trouble", it's so deliciously alcott. oh mands if only belief systems and the state could remain separate, the world would be much more peacful place. le sigh....
